According to Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants, the iPhone 17 and a new, slimmer model, rumored to be the “iPhone 17 Air,” could come equipped with ProMotion technology.
ProMotion allows screens to refresh at up to 120Hz, which leads to smoother scrolling, more fluid video playback, and better overall responsiveness when needed. At the same time, this technology enables the refresh rate to decrease when full power isn’t necessary, helping to conserve battery life. For instance, current iPhone Pro models can lower their refresh rate to as little as 1Hz, supporting features like an always-on display that shows lock screen details even when the phone is idle.
However, it is not confirmed whether the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will reach this 1Hz refresh rate or if they will be limited to a 10Hz minimum like some earlier models. This development could mean a significant shift in how Apple’s standard iPhones compare to their Pro versions, which have led with advanced display tech in recent years. In contrast, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus still feature 60Hz displays.
