Apple’s many products may support AV1 codec, code appeared in core media framework library

According to the latest report, AV1 open source video encoding, jointly developed by Google, Amazon, Cisco, Apple, Microsoft, Intel, etc., the purpose is to provide a more efficient compression rate than H.265, reduce data storage, and network transmission cost.

Apple launched the M2 chip at WWDC22, and it still doesn’t have AV1 codec support. The new chip supports up to 8K H.264 (AVC) and H.265 (HEVC), as well as ProRes video formats up to 8K playback.

According to the latest information, Apple may be preparing for AV1. A new global variable named ” kCMVideoCodecType_AV1 ” has appeared in AVFoundation’s core media framework library.

AVFoundation is Apple’s framework for working with time-based audiovisual media (mobile media) on iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Therefore, widespread support for AV1 may eventually make its way into Apple’s entire ecosystem.

Most of Apple’s competitors already support this codec. For example, Intel supports not only AV1 decoding but also encoding. Intel also released SVT-AV1, an open-source codec for CPUs that works with all of its modern processors.
