Apple stands accused of underreporting child sexual abuse material (CSAM) across its platforms, sparking significant controversy. Child safety experts from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) claim Apple has vastly underreported the prevalence of CSAM compared to other tech giants. According to the NSPCC, Apple was linked to 337 CSAM incidents in England and Wales alone between April 2022 and March 2023, yet globally reported only 267 instances to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).

This discrepancy is stark when juxtaposed with Google and Meta, which reported 1.47 million and 30.6 million cases, respectively, in the same period. Even smaller platforms like Discord and Pinterest surpassed Apple’s reporting figures. Apple’s end-to-end encryption in services like iMessage and FaceTime is cited as a potential reason for this disparity. However, the NSPCC notes that other encrypted services, such as WhatsApp, report significantly higher CSAM cases.

In response to the controversy, Apple defends its approach, emphasizing its commitment to privacy and security. The company highlights its shift from server-side scanning to developing on-device tools designed to detect and report CSAM without compromising user data. Apple’s director of user privacy and child safety, Erik Neuenschwander, underscores that scanning every user’s data could lead to unintended consequences, including mass surveillance and privacy breaches.

Apple remains steadfast in its strategy to protect children while maintaining user privacy. The company has rolled out features like Communication Safety, which intervenes when children receive or send messages containing nudity, and expanded these protections across more of its services. Despite abandoning the server-side scanning initiative, Apple continues to invest in privacy-preserving technologies and collaborates with child safety organizations to enhance its protective measures.
