Following the footsteps of Blizzard, Riot Games closes classic version of League of Legends server

Riot, a subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Tencent, has shut down the fan-made “classic” server for the League of Legends MOBA game. Previously, Blizzard closed the fan project before the release of World of Warcraft Classic.

Fan server Chronoshift allowed players to plunge into the world of the “classic” version of League of Legends MOBA 10 years ago. However, the received claims from Riot Games forced the authors to close the project.

According to one of the Chronoshift developers, they were contacted by a mysterious user under the nickname zed (the name of a shadow ninja from LoL). He introduced himself as a security officer at Riot Games and said the legal department was very concerned about the project team’s actions. At first, he acted quite peacefully and offered “mutually beneficial cooperation.”

However, as soon as the server administration began to erase information from the Discord channel, zed began to intimidate. Using the real names of the developers, he assessed their actions as a refusal to cooperate and threatened with archived chat recordings. He required developers to hand over the project website and source code to Riot. Zed also recalled the possibility of legal action if they refuse. He added that he specializes in finding people.

After such “negotiations”, the developers of the project received a claim. They were upset that the project had to be closed. According to the team and copyright lawyers, they did not violate anything and did not interact in any way with the current version of the game.

The last time officially “classic” LoL was mentioned was 4 years ago. Then Riot said that it would be difficult to create such a server, and also expressed doubts about the feasibility of the event. Previously, prior to the creation of WoW Classic, Blizzard was of the same opinion.
