Gemini iPhone update brings new model picker and Pixel’s ‘Enhance Now Playing’ rolls out with album artwork features

Posted on

Google has updated the Gemini app for iPhone, introducing a model picker feature similar to what’s available on Android. This update allows users to choose between different AI models, including the new experimental 2.0 Flash version.

New Features in the Gemini App for iPhone

The model picker, now located at the top of the screen, lets users select from three options:

  • 1.5 Pro: Designed for handling complex tasks.
  • 1.5 Flash: Suitable for everyday assistance.
  • 2.0 Flash Experimental: A preview of the latest experimental model with faster performance, though it may have limitations like no file upload support.

The 2.0 Flash Experimental model performs twice as fast as 1.5 Pro and surpasses it on key benchmarks. Google plans to make this model widely available by January 2025, with advanced features like the Deep Research agent expected later in 2025 for web platforms.

Extensions and Improved Functionality

The app also includes two new extensions:

  1. Google Home: Allows control of smart home devices (requires joining the Google Home Public Preview program).
  2. Google Photos: Enables photo access directly in the Gemini app (availability is still rolling out).

Additionally, users can save information via the Saved Info feature (accessible at gemini.google.com/saved-info) and view suggested conversation starters above the text field.

Expanded Language Support

The Gemini app now supports 11 additional languages, including Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, and Swahili, among others. Its Gemini Live feature is also available in 21 more languages, such as Bengali, Korean, and Telugu.

Pixel’s ‘Enhance Now Playing’ Feature Update

Google is also rolling out a revamped Enhance Now Playing feature for Pixel devices, replacing the older “Show search button on lock screen” setting. This update uses Google Search to identify unrecognized songs and provide album artwork for matches.

Key Features of Enhance Now Playing:
  • Accessible via Settings > Sound & Vibration > Now Playing.
  • A new Default Music Player setting allows users to set services like YouTube, YouTube Music, Apple Music, or opt for no default player.
  • When tapping a recognized song in history, users see a larger Play on [service] button and additional listening options.

Availability

The Enhance Now Playing feature is a server-side update, rolling out to Pixel 6 and newer devices running Android 15 QPR1. To access it, ensure your device is updated with the latest version (V15) of Android System Intelligence from the Play Store.

Google also made subtle interface updates in V13 of the feature, simplifying the Now Playing history interface for a cleaner look.

These updates enhance functionality and personalization for both Gemini app and Pixel users, making everyday interactions more seamless and efficient.
