According to the latest data from the International Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Association (SEMI) shows that the global silicon wafer shipment area in the third quarter of 2022 hit a new record of 3.741 billion square inches, an increase of 1.0% month-on-month and year-on-year growth 2.5%.

SEMI said that despite the macroeconomic impact of the semiconductor industry, the shipments of silicon wafers still increased from the previous quarter. It remains confident of long-term growth due to the critical role of silicon wafers in the broader cyclical industry.

The report states that silicon wafers are the basic material for most semiconductors, which are an important part of all electronic products including computers, telecommunication products, and consumer equipment. Highly engineered wafers up to 12 inches in diameter can be used as substrate materials for the manufacture of most semiconductor devices or chips.

Previously, SEMI predicted that from 2021 to 2025, the production capacity of global semiconductor manufacturers’ 8-inch fabs is expected to increase by 20%. Among them, automotive and power semiconductor fab capacity will lead with a growth rate of 58%, followed by MEMS growth of 21%, foundry growth of 20%, and analog growth of 14%.
