Google adopts new security protocol for end-to-end encryption in Messages

Google is adopting MLS (Messaging Layer Security) protocol for the Messages application to support end-to-end encryption. The company says that it is strongly supportive of regulatory efforts that require interoperability for large end-to-end messaging platforms.

According to the official announcement blog, Google is integrating with the Messaging Layer Security protocol and aims to enhance its Messages app to more extent. With this association, the tech giant would be able to bring end-to-end encryption for cross-platform messaging.

“…we specify a key establishment protocol that provides efficient asynchronous group key establishment with forward secrecy (FS) and post-compromise security (PCS) for groups in size ranging from two to thousands.”

Google further says that MLS would make practical interoperability possible across services and platforms, especially for multi-device users. This would open the door to new opportunities for users and developers of interoperable messaging services that adopt it.
