Google Messages gets a facelift: new camera filters

Key Points

  • Google Messages now has fun face filters.
  • You can use these filters to take pictures and videos.
  • The feature is still rolling out.

Google Messages, the app you use to send texts, is getting even cooler! It now has a new feature that lets you add fun effects to your photos and videos right inside the app.

Think of it like those filters you see on social media apps but for your texts. You can make yourself look like a bunny, wear virtual glasses, or even remove those pesky under-eye wrinkles (although we all know that’s not happening).

To use these filters, just open the camera in Google Messages. It’s that full-screen camera you can find on your main screen or inside a chat. There’s a new button to switch to the front-facing camera, but you can use the filters on both the front and back cameras.

You can take a picture or record a video with a filter by holding down the camera button or switching to video mode. There are nine different filters to choose from, and they’re pretty fun to play with.

You might have seen these filters before. They’re very similar to the ones you can use on Google Meet, the video call app. It looks like Google just copied and pasted them over to Messages.

This new feature joins another recent addition to Messages: Selfie GIFs. While it’s cool to have Selfie GIFs, it would be even better if there was a dedicated spot for them instead of hiding them in the camera menu.

Right now, not everyone can use these new face filters. Google is slowly rolling them out, so you might have to wait a little while before you can try them out. But when they do arrive, get ready for some seriously fun text conversations!
