Google stops making Chromecast devices

Key Points:

  1. Google ends Chromecast production.
  2. Software updates will continue for newer devices.
  3. New Google TV Streamer replaces Chromecast.

Google has decided to stop making Chromecast devices. On Tuesday, the company announced it will no longer produce the streaming dongles that have been sold for over ten years.

Although Chromecast devices will still be available until the current stock runs out, Google has assured that it will keep providing software and security updates for its newer models. However, the specific models that will receive updates were not mentioned. The latest model in the lineup was the Chromecast with Google TV, released in 2022.

Google mentioned that technology has advanced significantly since the first Chromecast was launched in 2013. They highlighted their investment in integrating Google Cast technology into millions of TV devices, including Android TVs. Google is now focused on enhancing streaming TV devices with more features built on the same Chromecast technology.

Replacing Chromecast, Google has introduced the Google TV Streamer, priced at $99.99, set to launch on September 24th. This new set-top box boasts a processor that is 22 percent faster and includes Thread and Matter integration, making it a substantial upgrade from the Chromecast with Google TV.

While the Google TV Streamer offers many improvements and may even compete with the more expensive Apple TV 4K, it’s unfortunate that Google is discontinuing the Chromecast. The Chromecast with Google TV, priced at just $29.99, provided an affordable entry point to a comprehensive streaming hub.
