Google Wallet Now Supports Passport IDs
Google Wallet now lets Android users add their passport IDs to the app. This feature, initially tested in October, is rolling out in the stable version of Google Play services (24.47.35) for devices running Android 9 and above.

This feature is useful for domestic travel in the U.S. where state digital IDs are unavailable. To add your passport:

  1. Open the “Add to Wallet” option and choose “ID pass.”
  2. Take a photo of your passport’s info page or manually enter details.
  3. Scan the security chip inside the back cover of your passport using your phone.

Finally, record a short video of your face, which Google reviews to confirm your identity. This digital ID is not a replacement for a physical passport or ID and doesn’t support international travel. If your phone is lost, you can remove the ID pass via your Google Account.

At TSA checkpoints, you can use the ID pass by scanning a QR code or tapping your phone on an NFC reader, followed by approving the data transfer.

Pixel Devices Get Battery Bypass Charging
Google’s December 2024 Pixel update adds a battery health feature that limits charging to 80%. This includes “bypass charging,” which powers the phone directly from the charger once the battery hits 80%.

This feature is designed to:

  • Reduce battery wear by avoiding full charging cycles.
  • Lower heat generation, especially useful during gaming.

Tests show the phone draws varying power directly from the charger based on usage, from minimal power when idle to higher rates during intensive tasks. This can extend the phone’s battery life and minimize overheating.

Currently, bypass charging is confirmed on the Pixel 8 Pro and is likely available on other newer models like the Pixel 8, Pixel 8a, and Pixel 9 series.

Pixel Screenshots and Gboard Recall Integration
The latest Pixel Screenshots update (version 0.24.433.15) introduces Gboard recall integration. When enabled, Gboard can suggest text from screenshots in relevant apps like YouTube Music, Spotify, or shopping platforms.

For instance:

  • Taking a screenshot of a song can prompt its name as a suggestion in music apps.
  • Screenshots of products might show as auto-complete options in shopping apps.

This feature works only within Android apps, not websites, and can be disabled in settings.

Other enhancements in this update include:

  • Better search terms and auto-filters for categorizing screenshots.
  • Integration with Google Wallet for saving passes.
  • A “Circle to Search” feature to save specific screen areas quickly.

Additionally, Gboard now includes the Pixel Studio Stickers pack and enhanced Emoji Kitchen browsing options.

These updates bring convenience and innovation, enhancing user experience across Google Wallet, Pixel devices, and Android apps.
