Here’s why you receive large OxygenOS update package

Posted on

Recently, some OnePlus phone users reached out to the community with a concern about a large OxygenOS update package. This build often goes in GB even when the changelog only shows a monthly security patch. Why did this happen? Let’s check out the reasons.

In recent times, we found large kinds of OxygenOS update packages in OnePlus phones. Meanwhile, a Nord 2 phone holder also reported an instance where he received a 5.08GB update with only a few minor changes in the security system and device’s performance.

Accordingly, OnePlus releases software updates mostly in a monthly timespan. Therefore, these update resolves both security and feature concerns. Besides, some build even install new functionality support and major software overhauls. However, we are only talking about the regular software upgrade here.

There are three reasons of your phone receives a massive software:

  • Big features or optimizations
  • Combined delayed rollout
  • Hidden Features or Changes

Big features

These updates come occasionally when the company releases new features or optimizations. A good example is OxygenOS 13.1 which is full of dynamic capabilities. Eventually, new enhancements may carry heavy weights up to 1-2GB. Again, these are also part of the regular upgrade procedure and improve the phone’s current health.

Combined Delayed rollout

This part is a bit advanced yet simple to understand. As the name suggests, the company often binds up several patches for the device that has not obtained the software update for a long time. Thus, the version contains all the safety improvements from the past months (that are not installed) and comes in a single large package size.

Due to important security patches, OnePlus doesn’t want the phone to lack any improvements. Therefore, it releases all of the packages for the smartphone at once. However, it only happens to users, who don’t update their device for a prolonged time.

Hidden Features or Changes

This is a significant reason behind the large OxygenOS update package. For a few months, the tech giant has started releasing such firmware that brings a variety of hidden features on board. Though these changes are not being mentioned in the changelog and appear as a surprise for consumers.

Again, such kind of hidden tweaks takes up much space in software which ultimately increases the package size. Hence, you need to explore the installed version keenly on your phone to check what new features have made their way. But notably, the security patch only comes in megabytes of package sizes and we suggest all of the OxygenOS phone owners get these updates as soon as they arrive.
