HarmonyOS 2.0 for more platforms including smartphones:

Most interestingly, Huawei will launch a mobile HarmonyOS beta source project for Chinese developers at the end of 2020. According to Richard Yu, Huawei’s consumer business chief, HarmonyOS is open to 128KB-128MB RAM devices such as smart TVs, wearables, cars, and more starting Septemeber 2020.

In April 2021, we will open it to 128MB-4GB devices and in October 2021, HarmonyOS will be opened for devices above 4GB. The 4GB RAM devices suggested being booked for smartphones.

Richard also announced that the first HarmonyOS phone will launch in 2021, probably in the first half of the year.

President of the Software Department, Huawei Consumer Business Group (BG), Wang Chenglu said at the event, users who’ll upgrade to EMUI 11 will get a HarmonyOS update “as soon as possible”. However, users will also have the option to purchase new HarmonyOS devices by next year (2021).

U.S. sanctions, GMS, HMS and biggest challenge:

In May 2019, Huawei was banned by the U.S., since then it cannot use an important mobile application suite – Google Mobile Services (GMS). However, Huawei made efforts to bring Huawei Mobiel Services (HMS) in the competition of Google and it’s nowhere near to Google’s mobile ecosystem.

Even though Huawei brings its so-called HarmonyOS on smartphones, the biggest challenge for the Chinese company is to develop its own app ecosystem to rival Google and most importantly to complete the requirement of its global consumers but the current situation doesn’t favor Huawei’s ambition to surpass Google.
