In 2023, Apple toppled Samsung from its leadership in smartphone market

Samsung has been the world’s biggest smartphone brand for more than a decade but in 2023, Apple toppled the Korean tech giant from its long-held position as the leader of the smartphone market. This marks the first time since 2010 that a company other than Samsung has clinched the top spot.

According to the input, Apple increased its shipments by 3.7%, by shipping 234.6 million smartphones, and acquired a 20.1% share of the market. Whereas Samsung shipped 226.6 million Galaxy phones in 2023, accounting for a 19.4% share of the market, that’s a 13.6% drop compared to shipments in 2022.

While, Xiaomi was the third-biggest smartphone brand in 2023, with a 12.5% market share and 146 million units shipment. Notably, the shipments of Xiaomi have also dropped by 4.7% compared to 2022. Moving on, OPPO acquired the fourth spot with an 8.8% market share and shipments dropped to 10% in 2023.

Furthermore, Transsion, the firm that owns smartphone brands like Infinix, Itel, and Tecno, saw a massive jump of 30.8% in shipments. The company shipped close to 95 million smartphones in 2023.

Ryan Reith, Group Vice President with IDC said,

  • The overall shift in ranking at the top of the market further highlights the intensity of competition within the smartphone market. Apple certainly played a part in Samsung’s drop in rank, but the overall Android space is diversifying within itself.
