iOS 18.1 adds clean up labels in photos and iPadOS 18 enhances Apple Music customization

Key Points:

  1. Clean Up Labels: iOS 18.1 now labels images edited with the Clean Up feature.
  2. Apple Music Customization: iPadOS 18 introduces a customizable tab bar in Apple Music.
  3. Device Compatibility: Clean Up requires iPhone 15 Pro or newer, or M1 chip devices.

Apple has rolled out the third beta of iOS 18.1, introducing the Clean Up feature in the Photos app. Clean Up allows users to remove objects or people from photos using AI. To ensure transparency, iOS 18.1 now labels images modified with this feature. However, this label may be easy to overlook unless users know where to look.

Clean Up Feature and Labeling

The Clean Up feature in iOS 18.1 is designed for photo editing but is limited to removing elements rather than adding or altering appearances. Apple’s system will label photos that have been edited with Clean Up, marking them as “Modified with Clean Up” in the Photos app. This label is visible in the photo’s EXIF data but can be missed unless specifically searched for. Currently, the label appears only on devices running iOS 18.1 beta 3 or macOS 15.1 beta 3.

The label remains when photos are shared via AirDrop or iMessage, but it disappears when sent through third-party apps like WhatsApp or Telegram. Apple may refine this feature before the final release, potentially making the labels more noticeable and accessible for third-party apps.

New Apple Music Customization in iPadOS 18

While iPadOS 18 doesn’t introduce many iPad-exclusive features, it brings a significant change to Apple Music with a customizable tab bar. This new design allows users to personalize their Apple Music interface by adding or removing sections like Recently Added, Artists, and Playlists directly to the tab bar for easier access.

The tab bar’s customization extends to individual playlists and playlist folders, making it easier for users to organize and quickly access their favorite music. This new approach sets a standard for future app designs in iPadOS, providing users with a more tailored and efficient experience.

Compatibility and Availability

These new features, including Clean Up and the customizable tab bar in Apple Music, are available in the iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18 beta versions. The Clean Up feature requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, or devices equipped with the M1 chip or later.

Apple is expected to release these updates later this year, offering users enhanced tools and customization options across their devices.
