iOS 18 introduces Face ID for app locking and hiding: a secure and discreet way to protect your apps

Top 3 Key Points:

  1. Face ID App Lock: Lock individual apps with Face ID for enhanced security.
  2. Hide Apps: Hide app icons from the home screen and App Library, are only visible after Face ID verification.
  3. Limited Notifications: Hidden apps won’t show notifications, calls, or Siri suggestions.

With the upcoming release of iOS 18, a new feature will allow iPhone users to lock apps using Face ID and even hide them from view, adding a significant layer of privacy and security to their devices. This update, currently available to users on the iOS 18.1 Developer Beta, will soon be available to everyone when the stable version rolls out next month.

How the Feature Works

To lock an app, simply long-press the app icon on your home screen. You’ll see an option labeled “Require Face ID.” After selecting this, only your face will unlock the app, ensuring that no one else can access it.

For even greater privacy, you can choose the “Hide and Require Face ID” option. This not only locks the app but also hides its icon from your home screen. The app will be moved to a hidden folder in the App Library and will only reappear when Face ID verifies your identity. However, keep in mind that hidden apps won’t send notifications, or calls, or appear in Siri suggestions.

Managing Locked and Hidden Apps

If you need to remove the Face ID lock, long-press the app icon and select “Don’t Require Face ID.” To unhide a locked app, go to the Hidden folder in the App Library, where Face ID will verify your identity. You can then select “Add to Home Screen” to make the app visible again, and this will also remove Face ID protection.

This feature is particularly useful if you share your phone or often leave it unattended. It provides a reliable way to keep sensitive apps secure, giving you peace of mind. The feature will be available with iOS 18, which is expected to launch in a few weeks. If you’re eager to try it out sooner, you can install the iOS 18 Beta or, for iPhone 15 Pro users, the iOS 18.1 Developer Beta.
