iPhone 16 Pro Max drop test reveals ceramic shield vulnerabilities
Top 3 Key Points:
- iPhone 16 Pro Max screen shatters despite Apple’s Ceramic Shield claims.
- Rear glass and camera also damaged in drop tests.
- Insurance or repair coverage is essential for case-less users.
Apple recently launched the iPhone 16 series, introducing new features like Apple Intelligence and enhanced durability claims. According to Apple, the Ceramic Shield glass on these devices is “twice as tough as any smartphone glass.” With the phones now available, durability tests are shedding light on how they actually perform in real-world scenarios.
Drop Test Results
A severe drop test was carried out by Allstate Protection Plans to evaluate the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s durability. In this test, a robot named DropBot dropped the phone from a height of 6 feet. The first test involved a face-down drop. Unfortunately, the Ceramic Shield didn’t hold up. The screen shattered on impact and became unusable. Although the screen flickered for a couple of minutes after the drop, it ultimately stopped working. Despite the screen damage, the phone’s physical buttons still provided haptic feedback, hinting that a screen repair could restore functionality. Apple charges $379 for screen repairs if the user doesn’t have Apple Care.
The next test involved dropping the phone on its back from the same height. The rear glass, including the camera cover, broke, but the screen remained intact, and the phone continued to function normally. For back glass repair, Apple charges $199 without Apple Care.
Comparison with iPhone 15 Pro Max
Interestingly, the iPhone 16 Pro Max performed slightly better than the previous iPhone 15 Pro Max in these tests. Last year, the iPhone 15’s screen cracked during a similar drop, showing that there has been some improvement in durability. However, glass still proves to be vulnerable to damage when dropped from significant heights.
Importance of Insurance
If you’re someone who uses your iPhone without a case, these tests highlight the importance of having insurance or a repair plan. Whether you opt for Apple Care or third-party options like Allstate Protection Plans, coverage is crucial. Allstate’s smartphone protection starts at $8.99 per month, providing peace of mind for potential accidents. It’s always better to have some protection for expensive devices like the iPhone 16 Pro Max, given the costs of repairs.
