iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air rumored to feature 120Hz displays

Top 3 Key Points:

  1. iPhone 17 and 17 Air are expected to have 120Hz ProMotion displays.
  2. Higher refresh rates improve scrolling, and videos, and support always-on display.
  3. iPhone 17 Pro won’t include under-display Face ID technology.

Just days after Apple launched the iPhone 16 series, speculation around the next generation, iPhone 17, has already started. According to Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants, the iPhone 17 and its slimmer counterpart, possibly called iPhone 17 Air or iPhone 17 Slim, are tipped to feature 120Hz refresh rate displays, marking a notable upgrade from previous models.

Key Display Upgrades

Young, a reliable source for Apple display information, shared that both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will adopt ProMotion technology, enabling them to deliver smoother experiences with a 120Hz screen refresh rate. This is a significant improvement, as the current iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models are limited to just 60Hz.

The 120Hz refresh rate not only enhances scrolling and video playback but also improves battery efficiency. This is achieved through ProMotion, which dynamically adjusts the refresh rate, potentially offering features like always-on display. This technology allows elements on the Lock Screen to stay visible even when the phone is locked, without draining much battery.

Power-Efficient Technology

The ProMotion tech on earlier models like the iPhone 13 Pro could scale down the refresh rate to 10Hz when needed, while the iPhone 14 Pro to 16 Pro models can go as low as 1Hz. However, it’s still unclear whether the iPhone 17 series will adopt the 10Hz or 1Hz low-refresh rate capabilities.

Under-Display Face ID Clarification

There has also been some confusion regarding the rumored under-display Face ID technology for the iPhone 17 Pro. In response to online questions, Ross Young clarified that the iPhone 17 Pro won’t feature this under-display tech, debunking earlier rumors. The feature is still expected to be absent from the regular models in the 17 series.

This early insight into the iPhone 17 lineup reveals that Apple is continuing to innovate, especially with display technology, making these phones a likely hit among users looking for smoother, more efficient performance.
