Microsoft Edge browser enhances file sharing between Windows 11/10, Mac and Android

Posted on

For the past few months, Microsoft has been developing the “Drop” feature for the Chromium version of Edge (the default browser for Windows 11 and Windows 10). The tool was first added to the Edge browser in May and was recently updated in the Edge Canary channel with another new feature: screenshot integration.

The “Drop” function of Microsoft Edge is integrated into the right sidebar of the browser, which also has shortcut keys for services such as Apple Music, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

Moreover, the “Drop” interface is similar to a messaging service, but files shared on the “Drop” panel are only accessible on the user’s own device. In other words, users can only message themselves.

Users can send anything via Microsoft Edge “Drop”. In testing, mpv.exe, a popular open-source media player, was downloaded and shared, and Edge uploaded it to OneDrive cloud storage. You can then open the Edge browser on any device and download the file.

Furthermore, users can share Windows files such as .exe, .msu, APK, photos, notes, etc. Microsoft is constantly developing new features for the “Drop” panel, the latest of which is a switch to directly capture and upload a screenshot and share it on the device.

Microsoft Edge’s “Drop” is actually provided by OneDrive, which may actually be just cloud storage, but Microsoft isn’t giving away storage space for free. Edge shows how much space is currently being used, a feature apparently tied to the OneDrive plan for the user’s personal Microsoft account.
