Microsoft releases Windows Terminal v1.11.2921.0 (official version) and v1.12.2931.0 (preview version). They bring the function of setting as the default terminal.
The user can select the default terminal as Windows terminal on the Settings page, and whether it is CMD or PowerShell, it will run in a brand new Windows terminal.

In addition, users can also select the default terminal as the Windows terminal on the “Privacy and Security” page of Win11 settings.
Apart from the feature update of v1.11.2921.0 (official version), it supports setting as the default terminal, and the rest of the features are consistent with the 1.11 preview version.
The remaining updated features of Windows Terminal v1.12.2931.0 (preview version) are as follows:
Match profile
Supports correct processing of executable startup matching of terminal configuration files. If the user’s configuration file has the same executable file as the configuration file selected to be started, all custom settings will be displayed.
For example, clicking the command prompt in the start menu will open the corresponding CMD configuration file instead of calling the default configuration file cmd.exe.
Window recovery
Users can set the Windows terminal to restore the previous tabs and windows after restarting. This function can be enabled when the “firstWindowPreference” is set to “persistedWindowLayout” in the global settings of the settings.json file or the settings of the startup page.
Fully transparent mode
Windows Terminal already supports full transparency mode on Win11, and the transparency of the window can be adjusted through the Ctrl + Shift + Scroll key combination. When the background becomes transparent, the text in the console will not be transparent to ensure that the reading effect is normal.
Other improvements
- Support using the keyboard to select the text that has been printed in the buffer;
- Support the automatic generation of configuration files for Visual Studio Developer Command Prompt (VS2017+) and Visual Studio Developer PowerShell (VS2019.2+);
- The user can use the Alt + Space key combination to open the system menu, this shortcut key will use the new openSystemMenu action;
- You can enable the “AdjustUndifferiableColors” profile setting to adjust the foreground color according to the background color to make it more visible.
