Overwatch 2 aims to bring plenty of changes, including limits to 5v5 gameplay

Overwatch 2 aims to bring a lot of changes, including a reduction in 5v5 gameplay over the six-member team size seen in the original game.

Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller explained in Blizzard’s What’s Next live stream that this change would make it easier for players to understand what was going on in any match.

“Overwatch has changed over time,” Keller said during a live stream. “We went from hero limit to hero limit in the game. We introduced roll lock during the game. We think this is the next step on the way to implementing overwatch.”

Keller said there was often “a lot going on” in Overwatch matches and it was sometimes difficult to keep track of what the other 11 players were doing. This change in 5v5 team size is an attempt to simplify the gameplay and hopefully allows players to make “better choices” as Keller explained.

Another major change is the lack of a tank player for the team. “Tanks are problematic,” Keller said. “One [damage per second] hero is very simple – they are on fire.

But one tank has the capabilities to make noise, or other teams need to overcome when standing with other tanks and there may be a problem trying to deal with.” Keller argues that when a team has two tanks, it can be very “aggressive” to the opposing team.

This stream is filled with little details about the PVP mode of Overwatch 2, the revelation of the new Monte Carlo map, as well as the announcement that Blizzard is working on more maps for the upcoming push game mode.

Blizzard said it was experimenting with new methods in addition to push. Several characters are tweaked as part of the sequel. Overwatch 2 has no release date yet, but fans should not expect at least 2022 at this point.
