PC market this year is expected to grow by 18.1%: IDC

Lingering concerns about semiconductor shortages do not stop the off-the-shelf PC market from continuing to grow. According to a new forecast from IDC, in 2021, PC shipments will grow by 18.1%, exceeding 357 million units. While IDC still expects PC growth to slow slightly (down 2.9%) in 2022, the 5-year CAGR will remain positive at 3%.

Analysts clarify that the current shortage has affected products manufactured at 40 nm and more. These are, in particular, automotive microcontrollers, sensors, power controllers, display drivers. More than half of all production facilities in the industry operate at mature technological standards.

Manufacturers are slowly ramping up production of these products as they prioritize and invest more in more advanced manufacturing processes. IDC experts expect that the deficit will begin to weaken by the end of the third quarter of this year, and a full recovery of the balance is expected no earlier than the first half of 2022.

Returning to the PC market, it should be noted that demand is growing in all three segments: consumer, educational and commercial. According to IDC, the consumer segment has the greatest growth prospects compared to pre-pandemic levels. The educational segment is in second place, and the commercial segment is in third.
