The overseas research organization IEA recently released the 2021 global electric vehicle development report. The report shows that after 10 years of rapid growth, as of the end of 2020, a total of 10 million electric vehicles (EV) have been put into use worldwide, and the number of electric vehicle registrations in 2020 has increased by 41% year-on-year.

Last year, the global sales of electric vehicles were about 3 million, and the European market surpassed China for the first time.

In addition to household electric vehicles, the number of registered electric buses and trucks has also expanded. In 2020, 600,000 electric buses and 310,000 electric trucks will be put into use worldwide.

The IEA stated that the resilience of electric vehicle sales in the face of the new crown pandemic depends on three pillars:

  • Supporting regulatory framework: Before the outbreak began, many countries were strengthening key policies such as carbon dioxide emission standards and zero vehicle emissions (ZEV) regulations.
  • Additional stimulus measures to protect electric vehicle sales from the economic downturn: Some European countries have increased purchase incentives.
  • The model and number of electric vehicles have increased, and battery costs have continued to fall.

At present, manufacturers including Volkswagen, Toyota, and General Motors have announced the development plans of pure electric vehicles, and are actively cooperating with battery manufacturers to jointly build lithium battery factories to meet future needs.

In the first quarter of 2021, sales of electric vehicles in China were approximately 500,000, and sales in Europe were 450,000. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association previously stated that pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for about 15% of total passenger car sales in Europe in the first quarter, which was twice the amount in the same period last year.

The report shows that consumer spending on electric vehicles will increase to 120 billion U.S. dollars in 2020. At the same time, governments around the world spent 14 billion U.S. dollars to support electric vehicle sales, an increase of 25% over 2019, mainly due to stronger stimulus measures in Europe.
