Renesas fire damaged chip Factory will take longer than expected to completely recover

Renesas Electronics today said it will take longer than expected to fully rebuild production capacity at its fire-damaged chip manufacturing plant in Japan. According to the new forecast, production will be restored by mid-June, rather than by the end of May, as previously thought.

The company said in a statement that at the end of May, the capacity of its 300mm wafer line at its Naka plant was able to return to about 88% pre-fire level. The remaining new hardware will be installed and powered on by the middle of this month.

The fire, caused by a power outage, has hit car makers around the world, which are facing a shortage of microcontrollers for automotive electronics. Renesas manufactures nearly a third of the microcontrollers used in automobiles worldwide.

The fire affected an area of 600 m 2. 23 pieces of equipment were put out of action. The cleanroom required for the production of microcircuits turned out to be filled with combustion products.
