Samsung beats TSMC to provide chips for Tesla’s next-generation self-driving computer

According to the latest report, Tesla’s new Hardware 4 computer and its upcoming ultra-modern pickup Cybertruck will be unveiled together, and Samsung will beat TSMC, Obtained Tesla’s next-generation autopilot computer chip production contract.

“Tesla and Samsung’s foundry departments have started chip design and proofing since the beginning of this year. Recently, Tesla decided to outsource HW 4.0 autopilot chips to Samsung. This transaction is basically a foregone conclusion. .”

Samsung beats TSMC to provide chips for Tesla's next-generation self-driving computer

The Hardware 4 computer will replace the Hardware 3 currently used in Tesla cars and support its semi-autonomous driving system. The company’s CEO Elon Musk previously claimed that the safety performance of this new device (also known as “FSD Computer 2”) maybe 10 times higher than that of manual driving, even when compared with the current generation of FSD Computer 1. It is also 3 times higher than the latter.

The report also suggest that this new chip will be produced by Samsung’s factory in Hwasung, using 7-nanometer processing technology. Although this process is relatively backward than the 5-nanometer processing technology used by Samsung, it can ensure a higher yield and better chip stability.

It is also known that after considering the production cost, the feasibility of Samsung’s technology in Tesla’s design of its own chips, and the possibility of long-term cooperation, Tesla decided to sign a contract with Samsung Electronics. According to information previously announced by Elon Musk, Tesla will not start the production of Cybertruck until the end of 2022, and full production will have to wait until 2023. Hardware 4 equipped with Samsung chips may not come out until 2022.
