Samsung is working on an AirDrop-like sharing service ‘Quick Share’, likely to launch with the Galaxy S20

Samsung is working on new software services, an AirDrop-like file sharing service, for its Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The new feature will be called Samsung Quick Share and will most likely launch with the Galaxy S20 on February 11 at the Samsung Unpacked 2020 event.

XDA developers found an APK of Quick Share from a Galaxy S20+ 5G and installed it on the Galaxy Note 10+ but were unable to get it to function on current Galaxy devices.

Quick Share has a panel within Samsung’s settings and, just like AirDrop, it only shows nearby Samsung devices. To avoid spam, users can only allow contacts to send files to a device. The feature can also be turned on or off.

This feature would not be available for sharing with other Android devices or iPhones. Samsung has one additional advantage, the Quick Share users will be able to send files using Samsung SmartThings. It will be done by temporarily upload files to Samsung Cloud and then streaming them to the device. There’s a 2GB daily limit on this.

What is Airdrop? AirDrop is a feature on Apple’s iOS and macOS. It allows for quick and easy sharing of files between devices over a Wi-Fi connection. Google is preparing its own feature called “Nearby Sharing”.
