Samsung unveiled 2nd gen 200MP image sensor ISOCELL HP3

Posted on

Samsung Electronics officially released the 200 megapixels (200MP) ISOCELL HP3 image sensor, which has Samsung’s smallest 0.56 micron (μm) pixel. Samsung said that the ISOCELL HP3 has a 12% smaller pixel size compared to the previous generation of Samsung’s 0.64-micron (μm) pixels, containing 200 megapixels in a 1/1.4-inch optical format.

Optical format refers to the diameter of the light-sensitive area of a camera lens. This means that ISOCELL HP3 can reduce the camera module area by 20%, enabling smartphone manufacturers to ensure the thinness and lightness of their high-end products.

According to reports, ISOCELL HP3 is equipped with a super QPD autofocus solution, and all sensor pixels are equipped with an autofocus function. In addition, Super QPD autofocus technology can detect horizontal and vertical phase differences on 4 adjacent pixels using a single lens, which allows smartphones to autofocus more accurately and quickly.

In addition, the ISOCELL HP3 allows users to shoot 8K video at 30fps (Frames Per Second) or 4K at 120fps with less loss of field of view. For low-light shooting, ISOCELL HP3 provides a better low-light shooting experience. With Tetra²pixel technology, 4 pixels can be combined into one, converting a 0.56-micron (μm) 200-megapixel sensor to a 1.12-micron (μm) 50-megapixel sensor; or 16 pixels can be combined into a 2.24-micron (μm) 12.5- megapixel sensor.

At the same time, in order to maximize the dynamic range of the mobile image sensor, ISOCELL HP3 adopts the improved intelligent ISO Pro technology, which can combine the image information generated by the two conversion gains of low ISO mode and high ISO mode into one to generate HDR images.

Samsung notes that the upgraded Smart ISO Pro technology features triple ISO modes (low, mid, and high modes) to further improve the dynamic range of the sensor. In addition, it enables the sensor to render images in over 4 trillion colors (14-bit color depth), which is 64 times the 68.7 billion colors (12-bit) of its predecessor.

With single-frame progressive HDR (Staggered HDR) supported by intelligent ISO Pro technology, ISOCELL HP3 can switch between high and low ISO solutions according to the shooting environment to obtain high-quality HDR video. At present, Samsung ISOCELL HP3 samples are already on the market, and mass production is expected to start this year.
