Swiss Supercomputing Center declares to establish strongest AI supercomputing with Nvidia

On April 13, the Swiss National Supercomputing Center, Hewlett Packard Enterprise,  and NVIDIA declared that they will build the world’s most powerful AI supercomputer.

The “Alps” system is scheduled to come out in 2023 and will replace CSCS’s existing Piz Daint supercomputer as a general-purpose computing system, open to researchers in Switzerland and other parts of the world.

Nvidia said that Hewlett-Packard Company will build the Alps system based on the new HPE Cray EX supercomputer product line.

This product line is a next-generation high-performance computing architecture designed from the ground up, capable of efficiently processing huge and increasingly complex data.

The supercomputer has the HPE Cray software stack, which provides a software-defined supercomputing experience, and the NVIDIA HGX supercomputing platform, including NVIDIA GPU, NVIDIA HPC SDK, and the new Arm-based NVIDIA Grace CPU.

The Alps system uses the close coupling between NVIDIA CPU and GPU to complete the training of GPT-3, one of the world’s largest natural language processing models, within two days that are better than the current world’s leading AI supercomputer NVIDIA 2.8 AI exaflops recognized by MLPerf Selene is 7 times faster.

The system will promote breakthrough research in various fields, including climate and weather, materials science, astrophysics, computational fluid dynamics, life sciences, molecular dynamics, quantum chemistry, and particle physics, as well as economics and Social sciences and other fields.
