The outage affected the services of 3.5 billion users of Facebook itself and its three major platforms WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. Facebook claimed that its Internet failure was caused by a configuration error.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov wrote on his Telegram channel, “Telegram’s increasing number of registered users is much higher than daily, and there has been explosive growth. We added More than 70 million transferred users from other platforms.”
Durov said that some American Telegram users may experience slower Internet speeds. This is caused by millions of people suddenly rushing to register at the same time. This will not have much impact. Telegram’s service is friendly and normal to most people.
The head of EU antitrust affairs Margrethe Vestager said that the downtime of the Facebook network shows that the world is over-reliant on some large technology companies. This situation must be reversed by developing more competitors.
At the same time, the Russian government regulator also stated that the Facebook disconnection incident showed that Moscow was right to develop its own sovereign Internet platform and social network.
Market participants stated that the nearly 6-hour interruption of Facebook’s WhatsApp affected the trading of Russian oil assets using digital cryptocurrencies. However, if users quickly switch to alternative platforms such as Telegram, the adverse effects of WhatsApp disconnection will be reduced.
