The US Patent and Trademark Office website showed that Tesla has applied for a new trademark for its catering services. The electric car manufacturer is expected to expand the convenience facilities around the charging infrastructure, including physical restaurants.
The US Patent and Trademark Office stated: “Tesla’s application has been accepted (it has reached the minimum filing requirements), but an examiner has not yet been assigned.
On the surface, Tesla’s business does not seem to have much to do with the catering industry, but in fact, the company has long been interested in entering the food industry. In 2018, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that Tesla plans to open an “old-fashioned drive-through, roller skates, and rock restaurant” at a new supercharger station in Los Angeles.

This may seem like “joking”, but Musk is obviously not joking. A few months later, Tesla really applied for a building permit for the construction of a “restaurant and supercharger station” in Santa Monica, California. The project was put on hold for about three years until Tesla submitted a new construction application earlier this year.
But these new plans do not include restaurants, although Tesla does hope to build it into one of the world’s largest supercharging stations. Many people think that the Tesla restaurant project has failed, but Musk claimed in April this year that he still hopes to build a “50s restaurant” in this place.
Now, Tesla is moving towards achieving this goal, including applying for a new trademark in order to use its “Tesla” brand in the catering industry. The company wrote in the application: “The Tesla trademark registration is intended to cover categories such as catering services, pop-up catering services, self-service catering services, and take-out catering services.”
Tesla applied for three new trademarks in the restaurant industry last week. This means that Tesla plans to name its restaurant “Tesla Restaurant”. However, the company has never revealed a timetable for developing the restaurant, but it looks like it is moving towards its goal.
It is reported that Tesla has applied for the construction of its largest V3 supercharging station to date in Santa Monica, which will have 62 charging points, equipped with toilets and dedicated parking spaces for electric pickup Cybertruck. The project was initially approved but was later postponed by the Santa Monica City Council, which prioritized the use of the land for affordable housing. After consultations, the plot was subsequently re-transferred to Tesla because it was not affected by the housing demand in Los Angeles.
Now that the project has been approved and put into use, Tesla is categorizing its trademark “T” registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office as “Miscellaneous” and “Advertising and Commercial.” But because Tesla’s “T” logo was registered for the automotive and energy industries, not for the restaurant business, the company had to reapply for the right to use the design as a restaurant logo.
In the application submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office, Tesla also applied for the use of its complete “Tesla” logo and the company name written in “standard characters.”
