Some employees who were asked to return to work were wrongfully fired, people familiar with the matter said. A few others were fired first, but management then realized their work and experience might be necessary to develop the new features Musk envisioned.
Last week, Twitter laid off nearly 3,700 jobs via email, a way to cut costs after the company was acquired by Musk, which closed in late October.
Many employees learned they lost their jobs because they had been suddenly suspended from accessing company systems, such as email and Slack. Now, Twitter is asking employees to go back to work, showing how rushed and chaotic the layoff process has been.
