Twitter fired almost all of its African employees just days after opening office in Ghana

Twitter opened its only African office in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on November 1 this year, but began laying off staff just three days later. Twitter appears to have fired all but one of its local employees, people familiar with the matter said.

Since taking over Twitter on Oct. 27, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has launched a massive layoff plan, cutting thousands of jobs at the company. Some employees learned of their layoffs through emails from the company, while others found out after being unable to log into their company accounts.

Recently, Twitter has come under fire for its sudden layoffs and lack of human touch. Affected employees will receive three months of severance pay, Musk said on Twitter. But employees at Twitter’s Africa office in Accra, Ghana, reportedly didn’t get that treatment. Twitter only informed the employees that they would be fired, but did not say anything about separation packages or the next steps.

Twitter opened its offices in Accra, Ghana, on November 1, after about a year of remote control. But just three days later, the local employee’s work email account was locked and their work laptops were logged out. It wasn’t long before employees received termination notices from the company.

Twitter African employees “The company is restructuring its operations due to the need to reduce costs,” Twitter’s director of human services in Dublin, Ireland, told African employees in an email. “We regret to inform you that your employment relationship with the company will be terminated as a result of this restructuring. ”

Employees were told that December 4th would be their last day at Twitter. Until then, employees were on suspension from contact with colleagues but needed to stay in touch with the company in case Twitter needed them to make a job handover.

“It’s very insulting,” said an employee who did not want to be named. One of Twitter’s senior partner managers tweeted on Friday that he was no longer with the company, but did not explicitly state that he was fired by the company.

Twitter appears to have fired all but one of its Ghanaian employees, people familiar with the matter said. Twitter’s mass layoffs also affect employees working around the world. Sources said the company laid off 90 percent of its Indian-based workforce over the weekend.

According to reports, Twitter also asked some fired engineers to return to work and implemented Musk’s transformation plan for Twitter, such as “Blue V certification” paid services.
