X updates Grok bot to direct users to official election information
Key Points:
- Grok bot now directs users to Vote.gov for accurate election info.
- Update follows complaints about spreading false election details.
- AI-generated images related to elections remain unchanged.
X has updated its AI chatbot, Grok, to address concerns about election misinformation. Now, when users ask about the 2024 US elections, Grok will respond with: “For accurate and up-to-date information about the 2024 US Elections, please visit Vote.gov.”
This change came after five secretaries of state—Minnesota, New Mexico, Michigan, Washington, and Pennsylvania—raised concerns with X owner Elon Musk. They reported that Grok had given incorrect information about ballot deadlines in their states. Although Grok is available only to paying X subscribers, the misinformation spread widely before it was corrected.
The officials appreciated X’s efforts to improve its platform and emphasized the importance of providing accurate election information. They hope X will continue to enhance its services to support fair and accurate elections.
However, the update does not address Grok’s feature of generating AI images related to elections, which has already been used to create misleading depictions of politicians. Additionally, X had previously removed the option for some users to report posts with election misinformation last September.
