Xiaomi patents Tri-Fold smartphone to compete with Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Fold
Xiaomi has been preparing for a long time to enter the foldable smartphone market. It is expected that the company is planning for a grand entry into the foldable smartphone market this year with different foldable phones.
Now, the company has issued a new patent for a foldable phone with a triple-fold (Tri-fold) design. The patent of this upcoming foldable smartphone is similar to the patent leaked for Samsung Galaxy Fold 3.

This means that the phone has independent external and internal hinges, which will allow different ways to set up the phone. It has a flat but curved screen that can be bent in two directions. You can fold the device three times to make it more similar in size, although it is obviously much thicker than a normal smartphone.
However, the key difference between this phone and Samsung’s Tri-fold phone is the overall size. Samsung usually chooses slightly rounded corners, while Xiaomi devices have a sharper square design.
Xiaomi Tri-Fold [Specs]
Last year, Xiaomi announced its flagship smartphone, Mi MIX Alpha. However, this device was not sold publically. The company last year chose the Snapdragon 855+ chipset for the Mi Mix Alpha, a step behind the Snapdragon 865, which was then dominant.
We can expect that the Xiaomi Tri-Fold smartphone will come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888. It is also expected that the company may remove the 108MP sensor — one of its flagship products lately, as this foldable screen will definitely increase the cost of its Bill of Materials (BOM).
In addition, we expect at least one camera can be a 64MP camera and can be used with a 48MP camera. The third one should be a telephoto camera with low resolution.
Xiaomi Tri-Fold Price [Expected]
Both Samsung and Motorola have opted for a higher price tag, but Xiaomi is generally known for making affordable devices. The company may choose a price tag near $1,000 instead of the $2,000 barrier used by Samsung and Motorola, although this can be challenging.
