A surprising announcement coming from OnePlus suddenly makes its users happy, not all, but some of them. The company has recently announced that it will offer three years of Android upgrades to its flagships, but there’s a catch. OnePlus 8 phones or newer are only supposed to get this update. The same thing Samsung did on August 05, 2020, at the time of the Galaxy Note 20 launch.
The software upgrades were the only field in which OnePlus was on the backfoot and now with the upgrade to the software upgrade policy, it stands beside Samsung. However, the Korean firm still got OnePlus in terms of speed which is quite impressive.

As for the OnePlus users who are using the OnePlus 8 or newer devices will get three Android OS upgrades, this also means that they will get three OxygenOS versions as well.
This is a bit surprising for the OP 8 and 8 Pro owners as they will receive until Android 13 (OxygenOS 13), while the OP 8T users will get an additional, i.e. Android 14 (OxygenOS 14) and the same goes with the OnePlus 9 series.
Every other OxygenOS update brings a bunch of new features and functionalities for the OnePlus devices. This seems quite big news for the users and for those who are thinking of OnePlus flagships in the future. Besides, the major upgrades, the company will also release four years of security support.
One additional year of security updates makes users stick with their smartphones after the Android support gets over. Moreover, it is also essential to provide an extra year of security improvements, to keep the last Android upgrade up-to-date with bug fixes and improvements.
OnePlus 7 and older will still get two Android OS (OxygenOS) upgrade
Some OnePlus users are happy with the new upgrade policy, while most of them are not. The OnePlus 6 and most importantly, the OnePlus 7 users won’t get three years of upgrade. That means the Android 12 based OxygenOS 12 will be last for OnePlus 7, 7T, and 6T users. Though, there will be still three years of security support for these devices.
Leaving aside the OnePlus 6T, at least the OP 7 series should have included under the new upgrade policy. The users of these devices are way too much but the OnePlus play’s its own strategy here.
If the OnePlus 7 (which the company does not sell anymore) will get three years of an update then who will buy its latest OnePlus 8, 8T, and 9 series phones which the company currently sells. This was an obvious and easy-to-catch mind game OnePlus has played.
If launched, OnePlus 9T will get Android 15, possibly the OxygenOS 15
As already known, the second half of this year will bring the ‘T’ series of OnePlus phones. The company will unveil the OnePlus 9T in the coming days and it will feature the Android 12 based OxygenOS 12 pre-installed. Looking at the software upgrade policy of OnePlus, the OnePlus 9T will receive Android upgrades until Android 15, possibly the OxygenOS 15.
This will turn out to be a big deal for the users if they are planning to buy the OnePlus 9T. Not just the 9T, all the ‘T’ series phones coming in the second half are indeed a good deal as they will receive three Androids and the latest one will come pre-installed.
In my opinion, waiting for the second half of OnePlus phones is always fruitful rather than buying the one with the old Android version. What do you say of that, isn’t it? Let us know your thoughts on this in the comments below.
