    Last week, Apple reported their biggest earnings ever, with revenues hitting $124.3 billion. When you look closer, you see that their main products – iPhone, iPad, and Mac – are selling well. iPads and Macs did particularly well, maybe because of AI, or maybe not. The iPhone 16 didn’t sell as much as last year’s model but still did quite well.

    Here’s why it’s good news:

    Tim Cook said that the iPhone 16 is selling better than the iPhone 15. This is a big deal. What’s even more telling is that the iPhone 16 sells better in places where Apple’s AI features are available. Right now, these features aren’t available in Europe or China. And China is where the iPhone isn’t doing as well, showing that AI might be a key factor.

    What Does This All Mean?

    It looks like Apple’s AI story is hitting the mark, at least for now. Apple can celebrate the iPhone’s success, but making their AI even better is the next big challenge.

You could ask Siri to find a recipe sent by a friend, and it would search through your emails, messages, and notes to find it. It can also retrieve personal details like your passport number or check your calendar.

    Apple Intelligence will make your notifications smarter by highlighting the most urgent ones at the top of your list. This means you’ll catch the important stuff without sifting through less relevant alerts.

    Image Playground Gets Sketchy

    Apple Intelligence now turns on automatically

    When you install the new updates for macOS Sequoia 15.3, iOS 18.3, or iPadOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence will start up by itself on devices that can use it, according to Apple’s notes for developers.

    If you’re setting up a new iPhone with iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence will be on right from the start. After you finish setting up, you can use Apple Intelligence right away. If you want to turn it off, go to the Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings menu and switch it off there. This will stop all Apple Intelligence features on your device.

    Before, with macOS Sequoia 15.1, 15.2, iOS 18.1, and 18.2, you had to turn on Apple Intelligence yourself to use it. Now, it’s on by default, so if you don’t want to use it, you’ll need to turn it off.

    Also, with macOS Sequoia 15.3, Mac users get something new called Genmoji, which lets you make your own emojis. All these updates also make notification summaries better, so you can see when a notification has AI-generated info in it.

    These updates are in testing now with developers and beta testers. They should be available to everyone next week.

For Apple Intelligence to then generate a “summary of the summary” is not only redundant but also introduces a significant risk of distortion and error. It’s akin to summarizing a haiku – the very act of summarizing destroys the carefully constructed meaning.  

    The BBC’s reporting highlighted that the problematic summaries often arose from the AI attempting to synthesize multiple news notifications into a single summary. While this feature is undoubtedly convenient, its potential for inaccuracy outweighs its benefits, especially when it comes to news. Temporarily sacrificing this aggregated view is a small price to pay for ensuring the accuracy of news alerts.

    Apple has thus far successfully navigated the potential pitfalls of AI-generated images, a feat that has eluded many of its competitors. However, the issue of AI news summaries presents a new challenge. While continuous improvements to the underlying AI models are undoubtedly underway, a more immediate and decisive action is needed. Implementing an opt-in system for news app summaries would provide a crucial safeguard against the spread of misinformation. It empowers users to choose whether they want the convenience of AI summaries, while protecting those who rely on headlines for quick information updates.
