Before the fourth quarter of 2022, Notebook chip shortage is unlikely to relieve: Report

Asus Co-CEO Samson Hu said that the overall shortage of notebook chips is unlikely to ease before the fourth quarter of next year unless IDMs in the United States substantially increase their production capacity.

According to the latest report, Asus Co-Ceo said, “the lead American IDM’s delivery cycle is still extending. Although the shortage of ICs for notebook computers is not as serious as it has experienced before, as long as the shortage of one type of IC, may delay the shipment of the entire module”.

Moreover, sources find out that Texas Instruments is still incapable to complete orders on time, and the long delivery cycle has caused difficulties to customers such as Apple. At the same time, the delivery cycle of Broadcom, another key supplier of iPhone, is also extending.

Furthermore, another source in the notebook computer industry believes that the current supply pressures are mainly caused by the shortage of Texas Instruments, not because of the tight production capacity of foundries such as TSMC. While the shipments of new iPhone chips made by TSMC were also affected.

TSMC’s October revenue to fall by more than 10% from the previous month. The reason is due to the shortage of certain other chips and components. In addition, the automotive ICs are still in shorter supply, the main reason is that the supply of Texas Instruments is tight. Although, TSMC and other foundries have raised their production support for automotive chips.
