The International Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) report shows that in the third quarter of 2021, global semiconductor silicon wafer shipments increased by 3.3% quarter-on-quarter to 3.649 billion square inches, a record high.
Moreover, SEMI pointed out that in the third quarter, shipments of silicon wafers hit a new high, and shipments of silicon wafers of all sizes increased, which provided support for various semiconductor components required by the modern economy.

In addition, SEMI said that demand for silicon wafers is expected to remain high because many new wafer fabs will be added in the next few years.
Furthermore, the supply of silicon wafers continues to be tight under the strong pull of market terminal applications. Silicon wafer suppliers including Universal Crystal, Shin-Etsu, and SUMCO have all recently expected that the shortage of products will continue until 2023. Among them, Seco announced that it will spend 228.7 billion yen to build a new plant in Japan to expand production.
