According to Huawei’s official website, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and Nordic Semiconductor recently signed a patent license agreement. Huawei has granted Nordic and its customers a component-level license for essential patents for low-power wide-area cellular IoT standards, the relevant patent license fees are set in accordance with the principle of fairness, reasonableness, and non-discrimination (FRAND).

The agreement was reached within a short period of time through transparent and friendly negotiations between Huawei and Nordic. Under the agreement, Nordic can provide its cellular IoT customers with comprehensive legal protection and a viable and legal way to acquire and use Huawei’s high-value standardized cellular IoT technology. The agreement will bring greater commercial and legal certainty to the IoT industry.

Nordic Semiconductor said: “Patent licensing in the cellular IoT space is a relatively new practice in the industry and requires a flexible approach. This agreement with Huawei marks the beginning of the cellular IoT industry’s gradual adoption of the global semiconductors Industry practice of licensing SEPs based on FRAND principles.
Reasonable and pragmatic negotiations were undertaken between the parties, recognizing that simplifying the process would help facilitate market growth, allowing various stakeholders, including Huawei, Nordic, and Nordic’s cellular IoT customers All parties benefit.”
Fan Zhiyong, head of Huawei’s intellectual property department, pointed out that in the past five years, more than 2 billion smartphones have been licensed by Huawei’s 4G/5G patents; about 8 million smart cars were licensed by Huawei’s 4G/5G patents are delivered to consumers every year.
In the video field, 260 manufacturers and 1 billion terminal products have obtained Huawei’s HEVC patent license through the patent pool; in the WiFi field, Huawei is actively discussing the establishment of a new patent pool, which is expected to be used for more than 3 billion WiFi devices worldwide each year provide one-stop patent licensing.
