LG reportedly using new type of lithium battery degassing process to improve the production efficiency
Energy Solution has applied a new lithium battery degassing process in its US plant. Unlike cylindrical encapsulated lithium batteries, this company mainly produces sheet-shaped lithium batteries encapsulated in aluminum foil.
This kind of battery needs to exhaust the gas inside the package after the manufacturing is completed. The previous process placed the battery cells horizontally, and the new process can be carried out by erecting the battery.
The manufacture of this kind of lithium battery requires stacking and packaging of electrode materials, then welding the electrodes, putting them in an aluminum foil package, finally injecting electrolyte and exhausting the excess gas inside, and finally sealing.

This method will result in incomplete exhaust and low yield. LG Energy Solution’s new process erects the lithium battery for exhaust, which reduces the volume of the device by 40% while greatly reducing the defect rate of the battery. After the exhaust is completed, the aluminum foil skin is folded, heat-sealed, and the excess part is cut to complete the manufacturing.
Officials said that the new technology has reduced the battery production line from 45 meters to 20 meters, significantly improving production efficiency. This technology will be used in many factories worldwide, including Poland and China. In addition, LG also plans to increase the production capacity of the US plant to a maximum of 145GWh.
