Microsoft’s recent recruitment information shows that the company is looking for a chip architecture technical director for its Surface department, which is a full-time position. The recruitment information briefly describes the qualifications required for the position and the responsibilities that need to be undertaken at work.

The job posting of Microsoft, “Are you passionate about creating cutting-edge devices and technologies? The Surface team is using next-generation devices to light up people’s experience with Microsoft products. Through devices with new experiences, productivity and mobility Together are our basic strategy. It is used to help individuals and organizations release their creativity, passion, and potential.”

Preparing for self-developed chips is indeed a major move for Microsoft. After all, Apple has been equipped with self-developed chips on its smartphones and tablets and has maintained an absolute advantage in performance and power consumption in the mobile field.

In the past two years, Apple has decided to replace the chips on its Mac production line with the self-developed M1 chip from Intel, which has also received good feedback. Therefore, Microsoft followed the example of Apple’s self-developed chip and fine-tuned the chip according to the needs and purposes of Surface products. It is also quite reasonable and more profitable.

The recruitment notice also mentioned that the chip architecture department as a whole is responsible for providing new features and new functions for the SoC of the Surface device. And clearly pointed out that Microsoft is currently building the next generation of Surface devices.

Of course, this may also be the recruitment of a person in charge of the semi-custom design business between Microsoft and AMD, rather than Microsoft’s complete self-developed chip. The reason why this time is special is that the information this time is completely for the Surface department.

Moreover, Microsoft previously released the Surface Laptop 3 in October 2019. The 15-inch version uses AMD Ryzen 5 3580U and Ryzen 7 3780U processors. And on May 25 this year, the Surface Laptop 4 was released. The 13.5-inch Ryzen version is equipped with the Ryzen 5 4680U processor, and the 15-inch Ryzen version is equipped with the Ryzen 7 4980U processor.

Furthermore, the above processors are jointly developed by Microsoft and AMD. However, AMD is not currently the only manufacturer that cooperates with Microsoft to produce self-developed processors. In the two generations of Surface Pro X in October 2019 and October 2020, Microsoft adopted the Microsoft SQ1 and SQ2 processors jointly developed with Qualcomm.
