Microsoft recently updated the 365 roadmap, which includes a new version of Outlook for Android, which will be named Outlook Lite. This version supports the main functions of the existing Outlook application but is smaller and faster.

Outlook Lite is great for businesses using low-end devices, however, there’s no confirmation on exactly what features will be included in this stripped-down version, and it’s expected that core features, such as mail and calendar access, will be included in this release.

ZDNet reports that the Outlook Lite app already exists in some countries, so Microsoft appears to be gearing up for a wider launch. According to Microsoft’s documentation on Outlook Lite, the application will be limited to Outlook, Hotmail, Live, and MSN accounts, and will not support corporate/institutional accounts at work or school.

Microsoft has rolled out a stripped-down version of Skype, and many other companies have made less-device-demanding stripped-down versions of their apps, such as Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, Firefox, and Google’s own Go brand.

Moreover, Microsoft’s roadmap shows that the app will be available on the Google Play Store later this month. Outlook is one of the most popular email apps on Android with over 500 million downloads on the Google Play Store.
