Qualcomm launches 2nd gen 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, could come with Samsung Galaxy S21

Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Sensors uses technological advances and ultrasonic waves to scan 3D features such as valleys, ridges, as well as pores of a user’s finger for a deeply accurate image. These sensors are used in the flagship smartphones for fast and reliable in-display fingerprint scanning.

Recently, Qualcomm has officially launched the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 that is a successor to the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 1. The second-generation ultrasonic fingerprint scanner will be available in new sizes that are 50% faster and 77% larger compared to its predecessor.

Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 1 measures 4x9mm (surface area 36mm2) while the Gen 2 will debut with a sensor that is 8×8 (64mm2), which is 77% larger than Gen 1. The larger sensor provides a larger area to place the user’s finger and allows the sensor to capture 1.7x more biometric data.

Samsung Galaxy S21 to equip Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensors Gen 2:

Moving forward, Samsung is the major brand that uses Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanners in its flagships. The company has featured the first generation of Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensors in many flagship smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S10, Note 10, S20, and Note 20 series.

However, Qualcomm said that the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 is expected to debut in mobile devices in early 2021. We can expect that Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S21 devices will also equip these latest fingerprint sensors. If the Galaxy S21 trio will come with the 2nd generation Qualcomm sensors, so it will also feature in the upcoming Galaxy Note 21 (tentative) flagships.
