Samsung Electronics plans to cancel to produce 70-inch MicroLED TVs in 2022 but retains plans to launch 89, 101, and 114-inch MicroLED TVs for the home market. MicroLED is more advanced than MiniLED’s backlight technology.
A single light source is only one pixel in size and independently displays red, green, and blue. It is very difficult to manufacture. Samsung said it will apply LTPS and TFT technology in these TVs, based on glass substrates.
Moreover, Samsung launched a 110-inch MicroLED TV earlier this year. The screen part uses a printed circuit board. This method is difficult to apply when the size of the LED chip becomes smaller, so it cannot further reduce the size while maintaining the same resolution. The LTPS TFT technology is more advanced than the PCB method and can produce 70 to 80 inches of TV, which is expected to be 4K resolution.

Furthermore, with current technology, it is difficult for the price of 4K MicroLED TVs under 100 inches to be less than 100 million won. In contrast, large-size OLED TVs with 8K resolution are much cheaper. This makes small size TVs such as 70 inches uncompetitive.
Samsung previously planned to purchase transistors from AU Optronics but instead used its own Samsung Display Company’s LTPS TFT. Besides, Samsung plans to launch a 99-inch MicroLED TV from March to April this year, but it has not yet been mass-produced.
The company is developing new technologies to reduce the LED chip pitch of TVs below 100 inches to 0.5mm. The current 110-inch MicroLED TV has a pixel pitch of 0.63mm, and the product is priced at 170 million won.
