Sony announces FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II G master lens
Sony officially announces a new generation of full-frame telephoto zoom G master lens FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II (model name: SEL70200GM2). This lens adopts an E mount and is suitable for Sony full-frame mirrorless lens. It is also the 15th G master lens. The product adopts a lightweight design, which is 29% lighter than the previous generation, and the autofocus performance is greatly improved.
This lens has a constant F2.8 aperture at all focal lengths, providing ample light input and a soft blur effect. The lens uses 2 aspherical lenses, including an XA (super aspherical) lens with a surface accuracy of 0.01 microns, which can effectively control the aberration changes during zooming, allowing the entire imaging area to have excellent resolution, at F2.8 Excellent picture quality is also available at maximum aperture.
Moreover, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens also uses two ED (low dispersion) glass lenses and two Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass lenses to significantly reduce chromatic aberration and prevent false colors. But the lens also contains an ED (low dispersion) aspheric lens, which is the first to appear in the Sony E-mount lens, which can suppress the chromatic and spherical aberration problems that are common in telephoto lenses.
Furthermore, this lens has 11 aperture blades, which can present a soft bokeh effect. The advanced optical design including the XA lens can effectively suppress the “onion ring” effect and further enhance the soft defocusing effect. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of only 0.4 meters at 70mm focal length and 0.82 meters at 200mm, with a maximum magnification of 0.3 times, providing excellent shooting capabilities.

In addition, the product can also be used with Sony SEL14TC or SEL20TC teleconverters to extend the focal length of the lens to a maximum of 400mm. The Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens is also equipped with Sony’s second-generation Nano AR coating, which can achieve a uniform anti-reflection coating on the lens surface, which can effectively avoid glare and ghosting in outdoor environments. The optical design inside the lens can effectively suppress internal reflections and further improve the clarity of the image.
The Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens is paired with a Sony micro-single body with advanced focusing technology to achieve a better autofocus effect. The new lens uses four high-speed and high-thrust XD linear motors to achieve fast and accurate autofocus. Compared with the previous generation, the autofocus speed is increased by about 4 times, and the focus tracking ability during zooming is increased by about 30%. When this product is used with Sony’s flagship micro-single Alpha 1, it can achieve high-speed continuous shooting at about 30 frames per second.
In addition, when using a teleconverter, it can also provide excellent autofocus performance. During video shooting, the lens can provide smooth and fast autofocus, and can reliably lock the focus and track fast-moving objects when zooming. FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II has a constant F2.8 aperture and excellent autofocus performance. The new lens can significantly reduce the breathing effect, focus shift, and optical axis shift during zooming, thereby reducing unnecessary picture movement and viewing angle changes.
In order to facilitate the user’s manipulation when shooting videos, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II has an independent focus ring, zoom ring, and aperture control ring for precise manual operation, and also has a step-less aperture click switch (CLICK ON/OFF). In addition, the linear response manual focus function enables fast, sensitive, and precise manual focus control. The equipped hood has an opening to facilitate the use of circular polarizers or variable ND filters, thereby increasing creative flexibility.
Furthermore, the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens adopts a lightweight design and weighs approximately 1,045 grams (without tripod mount). The lens is not only lighter but also more balanced. The center of gravity of the lens falls directly on the top of the tripod base, and the front of the lens does not feel heavy. In addition, the lens also uses an internal zoom design to keep the center of gravity unchanged when zooming.
Sony listened to the opinions of many professional photographers when developing this lens. The product supports full-time DMF, has a precise linear response manual focus and focus range switch lever. The lens also has 3 customizable focus lock buttons. The buttons are designed with a 90° distance apart so that they can be easily manipulated when shooting in horizontal or vertical directions and other angles.
Besides, the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens is dust-proof and moisture-proof. The front lens of the lens is coated with fluoride, which can reduce the surface of the lens from dust, oil, and other pollutants. It is easier to wipe off fingerprints attached to the lens surface. The official said that the product will be launched in early November, with a suggested retail price of 18,999 yuan.
