Sony’s new patent can improve the resolution of PS5 and VR screens: Report
Sony’s recent new patent indicates that Sony may be developing a machine learning technology for real-time image enhancement for its game consoles PS5 and VR, which can be used without degrading game performance and improve the screen resolution.
The Gamer stated that Sony’s new patents are somewhat similar to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology because the functions of the two are very similar. Nvidia’s DLSS technology allows the computer to use the normal resolution to render the original screen and output the game screen at a higher resolution when the computer is running the game.
Ideally, the game resolution can be increased without sacrificing performance. For example, the effect of the screen output is a 4K-level resolution effect, but in fact, the game screen is running at a resolution of 1080P.
Moreover, this time Sony’s patent was filed in April of this year. Sony announced the technology last month, saying that its machine learning technology can create a “mask” of specific images to hide, fill in missing or damaged data. Essentially, this will enable real-time amplification of the game without sacrificing performance, because the technology has a smaller burden on the hardware.

The patent also mentions virtual reality (VR) many times, and Sony stated that this technology is essential for providing high-quality images to VR headsets. It is worth noting that the resolution of PSVR helmets is still relatively low at this stage.
Sony stated that the patent can “do not sacrifice image quality where it is most needed to maintain user comfort and immersion.” It may be the next generation PSVR specifically built for PS5, which can provide players with a better visual experience.
