South Korea opened ultrapure water demonstration plant at SK Silitron

According to the latest report, the Ministry of Environment of South Korea held a ceremony for an ultra-pure water demonstration plant at the SK Silitron plant on November 16.

The new plant will verify various technologies related to the manufacture of industrial ultrapure water, including a UV oxidation system for organic matter removal, a degassing system for dissolved oxygen removal, and related equipment and construction methods.

Moreover, this plant is built in the semiconductor manufacturer’s factory and can also supply ultrapure water during the technical verification period. South Korea plans to complete the technical verification by 2025 in order to reduce its dependence on another technology.

Furthermore, ultra-pure water is essential in the semiconductor chip manufacturing process, and TSMC needs to use a large amount of ultra-pure water every day to clean the surface of the wafer. The organic content in this water needs to be less than 0.01 parts per million. Prior to this, South Korea had always relied on imports of ultra-pure water from France and Japan.

The purpose of this factory is to produce 2,400 tons of ultrapure water per day. In addition, the long-term goal is to reduce the utilization rate of imported equipment in the production and operation process to 0%, and the degree of import dependence on technology and equipment acquirement to 40%.

The sources predict that the global ultrapure water market related to electronics, medicine, steel, and semiconductors is expected to reach 23 trillion won. Among them, the semiconductor-related ultrapure water market is estimated to reach 4.4 trillion won.
