South Korea’s self-developed launch vehicle ‘World’ finally launched successfully today

According to the latest report, South Korea’s self-developed “World” (Nuri) carrier rocket was launched at the Luo Lao Space Center, and then the South Korean government announced the rocket launch. “World” was launched for the first time on October 21, 2021, but after the launch, the third-stage engine stalled earlier than expected, and the launch failed to successfully send the simulated satellite into the intended orbit.

The second launch was originally scheduled to take place on June 15 this year, but the launch date was then delayed by one day to the 16th due to weather. After that, sensor abnormalities were found during the launch preparation process, and the launch was postponed again to today.

Moreover,  Korea Aerospace first started in the late 1980s, and in April 1993, it successfully launched the first scientific observation rocket in cooperation with France. In 2002, South Korea decided to build its own rocket, but due to its limited technical level, it decided to cooperate with Russia to develop and produce the first-stage rocket, while the second-stage rocket was built by South Korea itself.

However, the KSLV-I “Luo Lao”, which was produced by cooperation, also failed to launch many times. Combined with the experience of failure, South Korea launched the KSLV-II “World” carrier rocket. “World” is South Korea’s first fully self-developed launch vehicle. The entire project took about 12 years and a total investment of nearly 2 trillion won.

The overall design of the “World” rocket imitates the “Falcon” series of SpaceX in the United States. It adheres to the design idea of generalization and modularization. After two launch failures, it finally successfully launched today. This is also the first time South Korea has used a self-developed rocket to carry it.
