Tesla’s new 12V auxiliary lithium battery, revealing the mystery of this battery. It is reported that this 12V lithium battery will be used in the new Model S and Model X, and the batteries in the previous two cars are all traditional lead-acid batteries.
This new battery is equipped with Ningde era batteries, greatly reduced in size, weighs only 1.8 kg, and has a cycle life of about 2000 times. Compared with the original lead-acid battery in terms of weight, size, energy density, service life, etc., it is greatly improved.
The upgrade of this 12V auxiliary lithium battery also shows the distinctive “Tesla speed” in terms of product iteration. Previously, Tesla used lead-acid batteries with 12V and 33Ah parameters in Model S and Model X. It can store about 0.4kWh of electricity, but it weighs 12 kg. The service life of this battery is approximately 2 to 4 years.

Tesla’s 12V conventional lead-acid battery
The new lithium-ion battery is smaller and lighter- only 1.8 kg. This is mainly because the energy density of the new lithium battery is much higher, but the energy content is also lower. It is reported that the new battery has only 0.1kWh power and 6.9Ah capacity. The nominal voltage of this new battery is 12.8V, which is slightly higher than the normal voltage of a lead-acid battery.

In addition, this new battery uses a small lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged at temperatures as low as -10°C and can be discharged at temperatures as low as -20°C. The battery pack is provided by Ningde Times. The battery pack includes 4 prismatic NMC3.7V battery packs, charging and monitoring electronics, and a LIN bus connection for communication with the vehicle.
This also means that the current four Tesla models are equipped with batteries from the Ningde era. Previously, the standard battery life versions of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y were equipped with Ningde era lithium iron phosphate power batteries, and now the flagship version of Model S and Model X are also equipped with Ningde era batteries (only auxiliary batteries). It is reported that the cycle life of this battery exceeds 2000 cycles, which is basically the same as the life of a car.
