TSMC and Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS) jointly announced that TSMC will establish a subsidiary, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (JASM) to provide foundry services in Kumamoto City, Japan. In the initial process of the 22-nanometer in order to satisfy the strong demand for specific technologies in the global market. For the 28-nanometer process, Sony Semiconductor Solutions will invest.
Moreover, it is reported that TSMC’s board of directors formally approved the plan to build a chip factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan on Tuesday, with an initial investment of 7 billion U.S. dollars, and mass production is scheduled to start at the end of 2024. JASM’s wafer fab in Japan is scheduled to begin construction in 2022 and is scheduled to be put into production at the end of 2024. The fab is expected to directly create about 1,500 high-tech professional jobs, with a monthly production capacity of 45,000 12-inch wafers. With the strong support of the Japanese government, the initial capital expenditure of the plant was approximately US$7 billion.
Dr. CC Wei, CEO of TSMC, said, “We are very pleased to have the support of leading manufacturers and our long-term customer Sony to provide a brand new fab in Japan, and we are also pleased to have the opportunity to bring more Japanese talents to TSMC. Global family”.
“Although the global semiconductor shortage is expected to continue, we expect that the cooperation with TSMC will help ensure a stable supply of logic wafers, not only for us but for the entire industry. We believe in further strengthening and deepening the partnership with TSMC Possessing the world’s leading semiconductor production technology is of great significance to the Sony Group,” said Teruji Shimizu, President, and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions.
Since the establishment of TSMC’s Japanese subsidiary in 1997, TSMC has been making a lot of contributions to the Japanese semiconductor ecosystem. TSMC also established the Japan Design Center in 2019. It is expected that the establishment of the new plant will serve the Asian semiconductor ecosystem goes further.
