In the rapidly evolving world of technology, OnePlus Executive explains why it’s not following Samsung and Google’s 7 years of software update path. For a recall, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series and Google’s Pixel 8 lineup both are compatible for as long as seven years of software upgrades while the newly arrived OnePlus 12 only support 4-year software updates.

In an interview, OnePlus President Kinder Liu in an interview with Tom’s Guide explains that they prefer offering a smooth user experience over blindly extending the duration of system updates.

  • It’s not just software update policies that are important to the user, it’s the fluency of your phone’s user experience, too, Liu explained, suggesting that longer software updates don’t necessarily mean much if your device’s hardware can’t perform at the same level.

Some manufacturers claim to offer seven years of system updates, but Liu suggests that they may overlook the fact that after four years, the hardware performance of the phone could decline significantly, akin to the bread of a sandwich becoming moldy. The result is a potentially poor user experience despite the extended software support.
